I didn’t think I could handle putting the full-size burrito in my mouth, so I was happy for a more manageable portion. The burritos here are massive (literally, thicker than my forearm), and fortunately the set only gives us mini burritos. A burrito is a wheat tortilla rolled up and packed with fillings, often meat, rice, cheese, beans and others. Juicy chicken and a fresh ingredients make this a healthy and simple fix. I daresay they did an even better job than any crouton I’d ever eaten, which can be hard and a little too large.Īs makeshift as it may look, this mini burrito packs a punch. Another textural balance here, the sliced and fried tortilla chips, which were a superb addition. They used the same shrimp in their other dishes so if you’re a shrimp guy, a shrimp burrito might be to your liking as well. Still toasty and warm, they had a great char and carried the smell of the grill right to my plate. Here, the fire-grilled shrimp really stood out. A salad isn’t too hard to prepare – but it’s the combination of fresh ingredients and a great dressing that makes one salad better than the next. It’s a huge portion even for two, really generous. The baja ensalada with fire-grilled shrimp is a straightforward salad, with lettuce, tomatoes, shrimp and their house dressing which tastes unusually like Caesar. Your order comes with a free bowl of tortilla chips too, which are perfect to dip in their range of salsas at the salsa bar.īaja ensalada with fire-grilled shrimp – a nice way to start the meal, a fresh salad with well-cooked shrimp and a nice garnish of tortilla strips. The food here is quintessentially Mexican – Burritos, quesadillas, tacos, and fajitas rule the roost here, with a few salads and assorted side dishes thrown in to boot. And with Mexican restaurants being somewhat of a rarity in Singapore, Baja Fresh was my first ever Mexican experience. Mexican fare has always been something I’ve wanted to try, but while I can tell a burrito from a taco, I’m no expert. It’s very efficient, but with such a fast-food feel and restaurant prices, does Baja Fresh make the cut? You take a number, have a seat, and your food comes surprisingly quickly. Ordering is done at the counter, where a large menu showcases their food. Not exactly a restaurant you’d expect to front a hotel. At first glance, it reminds one of a fast food chain, with its brightly coloured walls, fast food counters and cramped yet efficient seating. Not the most glamorous of introductions, but that was how it was. Baja Fresh doesn’t set the most impressive of first impressions. And that was how I arrived at Baja Fresh Mexican Grill. It was sheer chance that brought me to the doorstep of Rendezvous Hotel in Dhoby Ghaut, and looking for a place to eat, my friends and I simply picked the nearest place that looked suitable.
